What is the Wellue O2Ring Oxygen Monitor?

The Wellue O2Ring Oxygen Monitor is a ring-shaped device that you slip onto your thumb or index finger while you sleep, and it measures the oxygen saturation in your blood. 

The official term for such a device is a pulse oximeter. Emergency rooms and care facilities use them all the time (although they use the more “formal” version that clips onto the end of your index finger) because the oxygen saturation of your blood is an important measurement used for assessing your health. It’s considered a vital sign, just like your temperature or your pulse. 

A pulse oximeter works by emitting a red light that penetrates your skin and tissue. Some of this light is absorbed by certain components in your blood — specifically hemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin — while the rest of the light passes right through.

The Wellue O2Ring comes with three things in the box:

  • A micro USB charging cable
  • A set of instructions

The O2Ring comes charged up and ready to go so you can slip it on right out of the box to see how it works. The design is sleek and futuristic, with a large black OLED display face-mounted on an expandable silicone ring. The display shows three readings: your blood oxygen (i.e., SpO2), your heart rate, and the time. 

The device can be used on its own or in conjunction with a smartphone app and allows you to monitor your blood oxygen and heart rate in real-time as well as generate downloadable reports that track your sleep data on a nightly, weekly, or longer-term basis. You can even export these reports to a CSV file that you can then take to your doctor. The app is user-friendly and easy to navigate and provides information as date-stamped lists and graphs. 

Now, the O2Ring isn’t just a data recorder. It also wakes you up by producing a silent vibration when it detects low oxygen levels or an abnormal heart rate. This alerts you to breathing interruptions that occur while you’re asleep. This is an important feature because sleep apnea is extremely common but widely underdiagnosed as the symptoms occur while you’re unconscious and unaware.

The Pros: What you’ll love about the Wellue O2Ring

The best feature of the Wellue O2Ring is definitely its physical design. It’s surprising how comfortably it fits, given its size (on an average hand, the display spans the area from the base of the thumb to the first knuckle). The soft silicone ring stretches and bends for a natural fit, making it easy to forget you’re wearing it, which is a plus when you’re trying to relax and fall asleep. 

The other aspect of the O2Ring that makes it stand out is the detailed data it provides. Having access to real-time and recorded information about your blood oxygen and heart rate is hugely empowering. As mentioned, you can take this info to your doctor as this info is essential for diagnosing sleep apnea and charting a course of treatment for you. But you can also use this information to make some lifestyle changes on your own to see how they impact your readings. 

The Cons: What’s not so great about the Wellue O2Ring

The one area where the Wellue O2Ring is a bit of a disappointment is in the battery. The device is fully rechargeable through a USB port, but it just doesn’t hold that much juice. A full charge generally lasts for one night, two at the very most. So you’ll have to stay on top of charging it pretty much daily if you plan to use it every night, which is the point. 

Final verdict: Useful tool or dust collector?

The Wellue O2Ring is definitely a useful tool, particularly if you are someone who is concerned about sleep apnea and want to arm yourself with solid data so that you can move toward better health and better sleep. Will it collect dust? Probably not. It’s well-designed, simple to use, and provides valuable data. Make wearing it part of your bedtime routine and breathe a little easier knowing that you’ll get the information you need to take good care of yourself.
